What do a Swiss, Cyprian, Venezuelan, Portuguese, Spanish, two French and two Croatians have in common? The Idrija Hostel!

On April the 5th, a group of young volunteers came from all over Europe to Idrija with one idea in mind: ‘Let’s make the house alive’. Founded by the European Solidarity Corps, this project was coordinated by Tina, Helena, Tilen and Matej from the Idrija Youth Centre and Hostel. It lasted for approximately two weeks in which the volunteers worked with locals to give a more modern view to the hostel.

It started with a field trip around different hostels and youth centres in Slovenia where they got inspiration and fresh ideas that would later be applied in the hostel. The main focus of the work was on common areas. They developed their handcraft skills by colouring and building furniture out of recycled materials under the guidance of Katja, Matic, Maja and Matej: their building gurus.

The result has been an attractive outdoor space that invites guests to enjoy the coming summer days and great views of the town while having a drink in the new hostel’s bar ‘The Last Goat’. Also, the inside of the building has benefited from the volunteers’ work. Innovative ideas like a free shop where travellers can share their belongings, a big modern swing in the lounge and colourful designs along the corridors make this house alive. Also, with them, the volunteers brought some new inhabitant along. Ten elves and two goats has been spotted during the renovation work, will you find them?

Projects like this can put a town like Idrija on the spotlight for travellers and encourage new volunteers to come and learn about this beautiful corner of Slovenia.
